Hakuju Ui

Indian philosopher and Buddhist scholar. Born in Aichi Prefecture. At the age of 12, he entered the Soto sect and changed his name from Mohshichi to Hakuju. After graduating from Tokyo Imperial University, he studied in Europe (Germany, England, etc.). During that time, he published a research book (in English) on a Chinese translation of Indian philosophy in London. He served as professor at Komazawa University, Tohoku Imperial University, and Tokyo Imperial University. He was well versed in Sanskrit, Pali, classical Chinese, and various foreign languages, and conducted extremely rigorous, accurate, thorough, solid, and wide-ranging research. In particular, his six volumes of "Indian Philosophical Studies" (1924-1932) are a collection of essays that established the foundations of Indian philosophy and Buddhist studies in Japan, and are known as a world-class achievement for which he received the Japan Academy Prize. He subsequently published Japan's first "History of Indian Philosophy." He also published many other books, including the large-scale work "General Treatise on Buddhism," and his research spanned India, China, and Japan. In 1953 (Showa 28), he was awarded the Order of Culture.

インド哲学者、仏教学者。愛知県出身。12歳のとき曹洞(そうとう)宗に入り、茂七を伯寿と改名した。東京帝国大学卒業のあとヨーロッパ(ドイツ、イギリスなど)に留学。その間にロンドンでインド哲学の漢訳書の研究書(英語)を公刊した。駒沢大学、東北帝国大学、東京帝国大学の教授を歴任。サンスクリット語、パーリ語、漢文、諸外国語に通暁し、きわめて厳密、正確、周到、堅実、しかも広範な研究を展開した。とくに『印度哲学研究』6巻(1924~1932)は、日本のインド哲学、仏教学の基礎を確立した論文集で、世界に誇る偉業として知られ、学士院賞を受けた。続いて、日本最初の『印度哲学史』を刊行。そのほか、大著『仏教汎論(はんろん)』をはじめ、研究はインド、中国、日本にまたがり、著書は多い。1953年(昭和28)文化勲章受章。
