A single genus and species of liverwort in the family Makinoniaceae (illustration). The Japanese name and genus were named by Miyake Kiichi after Makino Tomitaro. It is distributed mainly in East Asia, from Japan to New Guinea. It is fairly common in mountainous areas throughout the country, growing on damp soil, rocks, and rotten wood. The plant body is leaf-like, dark green, forked, 5-8 cm long, 1-1.5 cm wide, soft, and has wavy edges. Numerous rhizoids are produced and are bright brown and very noticeable. マキノゴケ科の1属1種の苔類(イラスト)。和名と属名は牧野富太郎にちなみ三宅驥一(きいち)が命名した。東アジアを中心に,日本からニューギニアにかけて分布する。全国の山地にやや普通に産し,陰湿な土上,岩上,腐木上などに生育する。植物体は葉状で暗緑色,叉(さ)状に分岐し,長さ5~8cm,幅1~1.5cm,柔らかく辺縁は波状に縮む。仮根は多数生じ鮮やかな褐色でよく目だつ。雌雄異株で,造精器は葉状体先端部の半月状のくぼみに多数生じる。
