Surface hardening - Hyomenkouka

In the narrow sense, it is a surface hardening method using carburizing and quenching. In general, it refers to a method of increasing the hardness of the surface compared to the center of a metal or alloy. This can be broadly divided into methods that use heat treatment (carburizing and quenching, nitriding, high-frequency hardening, flame hardening, etc.), plating (hard chrome plating, etc.), and machining (shot peening, etc.). The purposes of surface hardening are to improve wear resistance, improve corrosion resistance, and increase fatigue strength.

狭義には浸炭および焼入れによる表面硬化法．一般には，金属や合金の中心部に比較して表面の硬さを高める方法をいう．これには熱処理によるもの(浸炭・焼入れ，窒化，高周波焼入れ，火炎焼入れなど)，めっきによるもの(硬質クロムめっきなど)，また機械加工によるもの(ショットピーニングなど)に大別される．表面硬化の目的は耐摩耗性の向上，耐食性の改善，疲労強度の増加などである．
