A general term for birds in the Podicipedidae family, or one of these. Total length 23-76 cm. A small to medium-sized waterbird that skillfully dives and swims in shallow waters, catching mainly aquatic arthropods such as fish and small shrimp. The body is round in small species, but longer in large species, with legs located at the very back of the body and a short tail. The wings are short and thin, and when folded, they are close to the body and tucked into the body feathers. The feathers are densely covered, adapted to a diving lifestyle. カイツブリ目カイツブリ科Podicipedidaeの鳥の総称,またはそのうちの1種を指す。全長23~76cm。小型ないし中型の水鳥で,浅い水域で巧みに潜水し水中を泳ぎ,おもに魚や小エビなどの水生の節足動物をとらえる。体は小型の種ではまるっこく,大型種では長めで,脚は体の最後部につき,尾は短い。翼は短く細く,たたむと体にぴったりとつき,体羽の中にしまいこまれる。羽毛は密生し,潜水生活に適応している。あしゆびには葉状の水かきがある。
