Kanjin Noh

Japanese:
Kanjin Noh

Noh performances were held to raise funds for the construction of temples and shrines, and the building and repair of bridges. One famous example is the Tadasugawara Kanjin Noh in Kyoto in 1464 (Kansho 5), which was held under the pretext of the renovation of Kurama Temple, and featured Onami, who was viewed by Shogun Ashikaga Yoshimasa and others. Later, it became an event for the Noh performers themselves, and was held frequently, especially in Edo. On the other hand, there were also large-scale, once-in-a-lifetime performances permitted by the shogunate to Noh performers, the last of which was the Kanjin Noh performance at Sujikai Bridge in Edo by Hosho Dayu Yagoro in 1848 (Kaei 1), which attracted 52,500 tickets for admission over 15 fine days.
