Japanese: ヒョウタンゴミムシ - ひょうたんごみむし

A general term for insects of the family Scarites in the order Coleoptera, or one of these species. The Scarites aterrimus is found throughout Japan, as well as in the Korean Peninsula and China, and inhabits seashores. Its body is shiny black, with the front horns of its thorax protruding forward. Each elytra has seven longitudinal grooves, and the tibiae of its front legs are large and toothy, making it suitable for digging holes. It is about 20 mm long. Overwintering adults emerge in the spring and lay eggs in early summer. The larvae reach adulthood around August.

甲虫目ヒョウタンゴミムシ科の昆虫の総称，またはそのうちの1種を指す。ヒョウタンゴミムシScarites aterrimusは日本各地のほか，朝鮮半島，中国に分布し，海浜に生息する。体は黒色で光沢があり，胸の前角が前方へ突出する。各上翅には7条の縦溝があり，前脚の脛節（けいせつ）は大きく歯があって穴掘りに適している。体長約20mm。越冬した成虫は春から出現し，初夏のころ産卵。幼虫は8月ころ成虫となる。
