[raw]? [Died] 395 BC. Haliartus, Greek general and statesman of Sparta. In 407 BC he became commander of the navy, and was involved in rebuilding the Peloponnesian fleet and in political negotiations with Persia. The following year he led the Spartans to victory at the Battle of Notium. After the Battle of Arginusae he again took command of the fleet, and in 405 BC he defeated the Athenian navy at the Battle of Aegospotami, which resulted in the surrender of Athens. After the surrender of Athens, he established an oligarchy in the city known as the Thirty Tyrants. In 395 BC, when the Corinthian War broke out, he led the army into Boeotia and marched to Haliartus, where he was killed during the siege. He was a man of outstanding talent, but his arrogance and willingness to go to any lengths to pursue his ambition made him many enemies. There are biographies by Nepos and Plutarch.
