Shuichi Goto

Japanese: 後藤守一 - ごとうしゅいち

Born: August 12, 1888 in Kamakura
[Died] July 30, 1960. Tokyo historical archaeologist. Graduated from the Department of Geography and History at Tokyo Higher Normal School after graduating from Numazu Junior High School. Became a geography teacher at Shizuoka Junior High School, and after serving as an inspector at the Tokyo Imperial Household Museum, he served as a professor at Kokugakuin University and Meiji University. He initially aimed to study court etiquette and customs, but later expanded to all areas of Japanese archaeology. His 1927 book "Japanese Archaeology" was an excellent introduction to archaeology in the Showa era. He excelled in research on theories of ancient tombs and their grave goods, and his compilation and argumentation of many artifacts, including mirrors, house-shaped clay figurines, iron arrowheads, crowns, and horse equipment, was particularly highly praised. He investigated representative ancient tombs in the eastern part of Japan, such as the Shiroishi Inariyama Tomb in Gunma Prefecture and the Matsubayashiyama Tomb in Shizuoka Prefecture, and received a doctorate from Tokyo University of Education for his book "Chronological Research on Ancient Tombs."

歴史考古学者。沼津中学から東京高等師範学校地理歴史科を卒業。静岡中学の地理学教師となり，東京帝室博物館鑑査官を経て，國學院大學，明治大学各教授を歴任。初め有職故実の研究を志し，のちには日本考古学全域に及んだ。 1927年に出した『日本考古学』は，昭和年代における優れた考古学概論である。古墳とその副葬品に関する遺物論的研究に優れ，特に鏡，家形埴輪，鉄鏃，冠，馬具など多くの遺物の集成と論証は，高く評価されている。群馬県白石稲荷山古墳，静岡県松林山古墳など，東国の代表的古墳の調査を手がけ，『古墳の編年研究』で東京教育大学から学位を受けた。
