Sony Corp. - Sony
A major electronics manufacturer. Founded in 1946 after World War II by Masaru Ibuka, Akio Morita (1921-1999), and others as Tokyo Tsushin Kogyo, the company initially produced vacuum tube voltage measuring instruments, electric cushions, and communication devices. In 1958, the company adopted its current name. The company started out by producing tape recorders (1950), and in 1953 succeeded in domestically producing transistors. Since then, the company has focused on semiconductor elements and their application devices such as radios and televisions. The company excels in technological development, and is particularly known for its technology to miniaturize products such as the Walkman (released in 1979) and 8mm video cameras. The company entered the global market early on, and the Sony brand is well known internationally. It is a representative growth company after World War II. It was the first to focus on the software industry before its competitors, and Sony's affiliated companies in the fields of record and film are among the best in the world. The PlayStation game console (released in 1994) was a big hit, and the third generation PlayStation 3 was released at the end of 2006. Sony also invested in digital satellite broadcasting and started new businesses such as entertainment facilities. In 1997, Sony entered the personal computer market (the VAIO personal computer was released in the same year). In 2000, the company further expanded into software and diversified, and in 2001, Sony established Sony Bank. In 2002, Sony made Aiwa a wholly owned subsidiary, and later merged with it. In 2004, Sony acquired Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, a major American film company, and in 2005, Sony attracted attention by becoming the first non-Japanese person to become chairman and group CEO of the company. In 2006, when Konica Minolta withdrew from the camera business, Sony took over the digital SLR camera business from the company. However, Sony was slow to establish an in-house panel production system for LCD flat-screen TVs, and its performance in TV games and other areas was sluggish. Sony's business worsened when the global recession hit in 2008. The company posted a large deficit in the fiscal year ending March 2009. It is currently working on restructuring, including reducing production bases and personnel. Its head office is in Tokyo, with offices in Atsugi and elsewhere. Its capital is 630.9 billion yen, and its sales for the fiscal year ending March 2011 were 7.1812 trillion yen, with a net income of minus 259.5 billion yen.
