A village in Kitatsuru County in the northeastern part of Yamanashi Prefecture. Population 1,123 (1995). It borders Tokyo to the east. The settlement is located along the Kosuge River, which starts at Daibosatsu Pass on the western edge and flows east. Surrounded by mountains on all sides, there is little arable land, and most of the area is covered by forests. The main industry is forestry, but local specialties such as konjac, wasabi, and mushrooms are also cultivated. Depopulation is progressing, but in recent years factories such as those for low-power electrical appliances have been attracted to prevent population outflow. There is active exchange with Tokyo, and it is also a tourist destination connecting to Okutama, and the clear streams of the Kosuge River, Shirasawa River, and Miyagawa River are good places to fish for yamame and rainbow trout.
