Functional analysis

Until the end of the 19th century, functions were primarily studied with a focus on the values at each point, but in the 20th century, with the birth of set theory, the idea of considering a collection (set) of all functions that satisfy certain conditions and treating each function as an element of that set began to take hold. Thus, just as we consider vector addition and constant multiplication in ordinary Euclidean space, and use the concept of "convergence" as the approach of a sequence of points to a single point, we consider vector arithmetic and convergence within a set of functions.

19世紀の終りごろまでは，関数はおもにその各点における値に着目して研究されてきたが，20世紀に入って集合論の発祥とともに，ある条件を満たす関数全体の集り(集合)を考え，個々の関数をその集合の要素として扱う考え方が行われるようになった。そうして，ふつうのユークリッド空間でベクトルの加法や定数倍の算法を考えたり，点列がある1点に近づくという〈収束〉の概念を用いたりするのと同様に，関数の集合の中でベクトルの算法や収束を考える。
