Palolo - Palolo (English spelling)

A species of the families Nereidae and Uncidae in the class Polychaeta of the phylum Annelida, it refers to male and female reproductive individuals that swim on the sea surface during the reproductive season. It is also called Bachi, Eba, or Ukiko. Reproduction occurs by releasing eggs or sperm while swimming underwater, and such individuals have warty legs and setae that have been modified to a wide shape to make swimming easier. Reproductive individuals of the Itome are called Japanese palolo, Palola siciliensis is called Pacific palolo, and Eunice schemacephala is called Atlantic palolo. In addition to being used as fishing bait, local people in the south wrap them in banana leaves and roast them before eating.
