One of the basic soil formation processes, it is also called mechanical movement of clay. It is a process in which fine clay particles move from the surface of the soil profile in suspension in seepage water without being chemically decomposed, and accumulate in the lower layers. The area where clay accumulates is called the argillic horizon. A prerequisite for the residuization process is that clay particles are dispersed in the seepage water, and therefore it proceeds most strongly when the soil pH is between 6.5 and 5.5.
