Gerhard Hüsch

German baritone. He studied in his hometown of Hannover and made his debut in 1923. After performing at the Bremen and Cologne opera houses, he was a central baritone at the Berlin State Opera from 1930 to 1942. In 1930, he appeared at the Bayreuth Festival under the baton of Toscanini, and also sang at major European opera houses such as London, Milan, and Vienna. In 1932, he gave his first recital of German songs, and thereafter continued to study song interpretation, becoming renowned in this field as well. He first came to Japan in 1952 (Showa 27). He was also an accomplished educator, teaching mainly in Munich, but also engaged in a wide range of educational activities in Japan, including serving as a professor at the Tokyo University of the Arts from 1986 to 1988.

ドイツのバリトン歌手。生地ハノーバーで学び、1923年にデビュー。ブレーメン、ケルンの各歌劇場を経て、30~42年ベルリン国立歌劇場の中心的バリトン歌手として活躍。30年にはトスカニーニの指揮でバイロイト音楽祭に出演、またロンドン、ミラノ、ウィーンなどヨーロッパの主要歌劇場でも歌った。32年にドイツ歌曲による最初のリサイタルを開催、以後歌曲解釈の研究を続け、この分野でも名声を博した。初来日は52年(昭和27)。教育者としても優れ、ミュンヘンでおもに教えたが、61~63年東京芸大の教授を務めるなど、日本でも幅広く教育活動を行った。
