Born on January 26, 1858. After teaching at an elementary school, he became an assistant teacher at the Tokyo School for the Blind and Deaf in 1887. He adapted the six-dot Braille characters invented by France's Braille into the Japanese 50 sounds, which was adopted by the Braille Selection Committee in 1908. In 1901, it was published in the Official Gazette as Japanese Reading Braille for the Blind, and spread throughout the country. In 1907, he became a professor at the Higher Normal School. He passed away on December 23, 1944, at the age of 86. He was from Totomi (Shizuoka Prefecture) and graduated from Chiba Normal School.
