This is a method of hardening only the surface layer of gears, cylinder inner surfaces, crankshaft journal surfaces, etc., in order to improve properties such as hardness and wear resistance. It is generally applied to steel materials. There are induction hardening, flame hardening, electrolytic hardening, etc.
[Induction hardening]
This method uses Joule heat generated by high-frequency current as a heating source. High-frequency current has a property called the skin effect, in which current flows only through the surface layer of a conductor, so the surface of the material to be treated can be heated instantaneously by passing the high-frequency current through it, with almost no heating effect on the interior.

　加熱源として高周波電流によるジュール熱を利用する方法。高周波電流は，スキンエフェクトskin effectといって導電体の表面層だけに電流が流れる性質をもっているので，被処理材表面を瞬間的に高周波電流を通して加熱することができ，内部にはほとんど加熱の影響が及ばない。
