A deciduous shrub of the Thymelaeaceae family (APG classification: Thymelaeaceae). It grows to a height of about 1.5 meters. The leaves are opposite, ovate-elliptical, entire, and the trunk is hairless and brown, and the branches are oppositely branched. In autumn, the thin branches bear terminal inflorescences of a dozen or so small yellow flowers. It is found in Honshu, Shikoku, Kyushu, and southern Korea, west of the Kinki region. The bark, like that of gampi, is used to make washi paper.
