...Depending on the way it was applied, it was called "kuro-nuri" (black lacquer), "muku-no-mi" (matte), or "sawashi-nuri" (thinly applied). Also, when it was made without wrinkles and had a smooth shine, it was called "sparkling eboshi."

Books from the Heian period show that eboshi hats had strings that were used to tie them, but most were probably simply worn on the head.
