...Population: about 2,500. Originating from the ancient city of Mesembria, it flourished in the Middle Ages as a strategic military and trade center for the Bulgarian and Byzantine empires. There are many remains of important churches, the earliest of which is the 5th century basilica-style Metropolitan Church of Mitropolia.
