A city in the north of Mie Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1937. Located at the mouth of the Ibi River, the city developed as an important port on Ise Bay from the Muromachi period, and in the early modern period it flourished as a castle town and a post town on the Tokaido between Miya (Atsuta) and the city's seven-ri ferry crossing. Commerce and industry are thriving, and the foundry industry, which uses sand from the Ibi River, is one of the largest in the country. Other industries include machinery, steel, chemical fibers, and textiles. The city is also famous for its clams and seaweed farming. The city is served by the Kansai Main Line, Kintetsu Nagoya Line, Yoro Railway, Sangi Railway Hokusei Line, Tomei-Osaka Expressway, and National Route 1. Tado Shrine is located in the mountainous area to the north, and Nagashima Onsen, which has recreational facilities, is located to the south. In December 2004, Tado Town and Nagashima Town in Kuwana County were incorporated.
