American children's author. Born in Maryland, after graduating from Harvard University, she worked as an editor for a while. Her debut as an author was in 1934 when she wrote Grammar Is Fun, complete with humorous pencil illustrations. Two years later, she published The Bull that Loved Flowers, which was well received. This work, which tells the story of a cow who prefers a peaceful life surrounded by flowers to fighting in a bullfight, has come to be counted among the classic American picture books, with the help of Robert Lawson's humorous black-and-white illustrations.
