A hairpin-shaped iron toy with a round ring and two forked legs. It is a type of flute toy less than 10cm long, and was popular during the Edo period. It was so named because it makes a "biyabon" sound when you flick the prongs on one of the legs with your hand. It was also called a biwa flute. The 1830 (Tenpo 1) publication of Kiyu Shoran states, "Children in Edo also played with this flute. It was called biyabon because the sound it made sounds like biyabon." This tells us how popular it was. In addition to being a child's toy, high-quality products were also loved and prized among adults. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
