Angiocardiography

…Angiography is performed to diagnose diseases of the blood vessels themselves, such as arteriosclerotic blockages, aneurysms, varicose veins, thrombosis, congenital malformations, and trauma, as well as to diagnose benign and malignant tumors in solid organs such as the brain, liver, and kidneys by imaging the blood vessels that control these organs. When it is performed to diagnose cardiac lesions, it is sometimes called angiocardiography or coronary angiography, which is sometimes distinguished from other general angiography, but the method is basically the same. The contrast agent currently used in angiography is a triiodine compound, which has three iodine atoms bonded to a benzene nucleus. When X-rays are taken with this in the blood vessels, the iodine atoms absorb X-rays so much that only the blood vessels are depicted as standing out from the other body tissues that do not contain the contrast agent. …

…血管撮影が施行されるのは，血管自体の病気，たとえば動脈硬化性閉塞，動脈瘤，静脈瘤，血栓症，先天奇形，外傷などの診断を目的とするほかに，脳，肝臓，腎臓のような実質性臓器の支配血管を撮影することによって，これらの臓器内の良性および悪性腫瘍の診断を行うことを目的とする場合がある。心臓の病変を診断する目的で行うときは心血管撮影angiocardiographyあるいは冠動脈撮影として，他の一般の血管撮影と区別することがあるが，方法は基本的には同一である。現在血管撮影に用いられている造影剤はベンゼン核にヨード3原子が結合したトリヨード化合物であり，これが血管内に入った状態でX線撮影を行うと，ヨード原子によるX線の吸収が大きいため造影剤の入っていない他の人体組織の中から血管のみが浮き出した形で描出される。…
