A city in the Khabarovsk region of the Russian Far East. It means "Nikolaevsk on the Amur River." It is often simply called Nikolaevsk, and in Japan it was called Nikolayevsk. It is located on the left bank of the Amur River, about 80 km from the mouth. Population: 36,500 (1992). It was founded in 1850 by Ginevel'skoi, a Russian military officer and Far Eastern scholar, and became a city in 1856. It was once the administrative center of Primorsky Krai and the main port of the Russian Navy in the Pacific region, but it declined when these functions were transferred to Khabarovsk and Vladivostok.
