Gilman, DC

…It was founded in 1867 with a donation from the Quaker merchant Johns Hopkins, and classes began in 1876. Its first president, DC Gilman (1831-1908), made an effort to create a university centered on academic research in Europe, especially Germany, and established the first graduate-level courses in America centered on scientific research, shifting the emphasis of traditional university education from undergraduate to graduate education, and from general education to specialized education. The success of the graduate university became a model for the formation of graduate education in the United States thereafter, and had a major impact on graduate education at Harvard, Columbia, Yale, and other universities at the time. …
