Tonantzin

...It is not entirely clear today how Zumárraga responded to the incident, but a church was soon built at the site of the apparition and it quickly became the object of worship for many indigenous people. On the other hand, since Tepejac was a sacred place dedicated to Tonantzin (which means "Our Mother" in Nahuatl) from before the conquest, there were strong voices, especially within religious orders, that criticized the apparitions as "the devil's idea". Nevertheless, the devotion to Guadalupe, which can be seen as an expression of the spiritual unity between the conquerors and the conquered, grew stronger over time.
