A former town in Katori County, northeastern Chiba Prefecture. It straddles the Shimousa Plateau and the northern part of the Kujukuri Plain. The so-called "80,000 koku tidal flats," which were created by draining the Tsubakiumi Sea in the early modern period, are one of the prefecture's leading grain-producing areas. The Otone Irrigation Canal runs through the town, and it produces rice, vegetables, and other produce. It is home to the historic home of Ohara Yugaku. 千葉県北東部,香取郡の旧町。下総(しもうさ)台地と九十九里平野北部にまたがる。近世に椿海を干拓したいわゆる〈干潟八万石〉は県内有数の穀倉地帯。大利根用水が通じ,米,蔬菜などを産する。大原幽学の生家(史跡)がある。2005年7月海上郡海上町,飯岡町と旭市へ編入。32.44km2。8312人(2003)。
