From the Middle Ages to the Renaissance, theatrical clowns were already active, albeit simply, in the form of theatrical plays, such as the "Festival of Fools," which followed the "Festival of Fools" (in which the lowest-ranking monk in the church was made the bishop and performed a parody of the mass), in Germany carnival plays, and in England morris dancing, sword dancing, and morality plays (in which the "vice" who tempts the protagonist was the clown). Furthermore, the popularity of the Commedia dell'Arte, which originated in 16th-century Italy, was spreading abroad.
