A general term for insects in the Hemiptera family, Cicadellidae. Small leafhoppers that live on leaves, most of which are 4mm or less in body length. There are many species, with nearly 100 known in Japan, but many of them look very similar, making identification extremely difficult. On closer inspection, many species have beautiful colors and markings. They suck juice from the leaf surface, leaving small, pale-colored spots. When they occur in large numbers, they can cause the leaves to fall. The tea green leafhopper, a pest of tea, has long been known as the tea planthopper.
