A book of Kabuki commentary. Two volumes, four books. Written by Mitei Haruma II. Illustrated by Baichourou Kunisada and Ichieisai Hoen (first volume), and Ichiransai Kunitsuna (second volume). First volume published in 1858 (Ansei 5), second volume published in 1859 by Tsutaya Kichizo, Minami Tenmacho, Edo. This book explains the structure of the Kabuki stage, props, small props, and tricks, mainly with illustrations, and adds explanations of the musical instruments, aiming to introduce everything behind the scenes. It was created to satisfy the desires of audiences and readers who wanted to see behind the scenes and see the secrets behind the tricks that were often used, but it is also a good resource for conveying the unique directing techniques of Kabuki in the late early modern period (late Edo period).
