1609‐57 An Ottoman writer. Katip Çelebi was a nickname based on his occupation; his real name was Mustafa bin Abdullah. In the West, he was known as Hajj Khalifa. He was born in Istanbul as the son of a civil servant, and after working as a practical civil servant and holding various posts around the country, he died in Istanbul. In addition to his work, he continued to study both Islamic studies and secular learning, and left behind many works in a wide range of fields, including bibliography, history, geography, and Islamic theology, making him known as the greatest encyclopedic polymath of the Ottoman period.
