Velvet moth - Velvet moth
An insect of the family Tortricidae in the order Lepidoptera. Its wingspan is 3-5cm, making it the largest moth in this family. The forewings are velvety black with numerous yellow short stripes and small patterns scattered across them, and a red band runs down the center of the wing from the base to the outer edge, and the outer edge is also red. The hind wings and abdomen are orange-yellow with numerous black patterns. Males are small and dark in color, with the outer half of the hind wings being almost black. They are distributed in Honshu (west of Kanto), Shikoku, Kyushu, and Yakushima. They emerge twice a year, with adults appearing from June to October. They are diurnal flyers, but will also fly to lights.

鱗翅目ハマキガ科の昆虫。翅の開張3~5cmで,この科のガの中での最大種である。前翅はビロードのような黒地に無数の黄色短条や小さな紋をちりばめ,基部から外縁に向かって翅の中央を赤帯が走り,外縁部も赤色。後翅と腹部は橙黄色で,黒紋が多数ある。雄は小型で,色彩が濃く,後翅の外半はほとんど黒い。本州(関東以西),四国,九州,屋久島に分布する。年2回の発生で,6~10月に成虫が出る。昼飛性だが,灯火にも飛来する。
