This temple was located in Asuka Village, Takaichi County, Nara Prefecture. It is said to be the family temple of the Yamato no Aya clan, who came from overseas. The first recorded document is the entry for the first year of the Shucho era (686) in the Nihon Shoki, which says that "100 households were sealed off." Excavations have revealed that the main hall and west gate were built in the second half of the 7th century, and the lecture hall and pagoda at the end of the 7th century. The fact that the temple was built in two periods is thought to reflect the political ups and downs of the Tokan clan at the time. It seems that in the Middle Ages it was also known as Doko-ji Temple, and a temple bell with an inscription from 1513 has been found there.
