...This refers to plate glass that has been thermally or chemically treated to create a compressive stress layer on its surface. Glass breaks when minute flaws on its surface, called Griffith flaws, grow due to tensile stress. Therefore, if a compressive stress layer is created on the surface, even if the glass is placed under a certain amount of stress, the surface stress will be kept in a compressive state and it will not break.
