A city in central Gifu Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1954. The city center is on the left bank of the Nagara River, and developed as a distribution center for Minoshi paper produced in Makidani (Itadori River basin) and Mugidani. Hon-Minoshi paper, made only from paper mulberry, was designated an Important Intangible Cultural Property (comprehensive designation) in 1969, and in 2014 was registered as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity under the category of "Japanese paper: Japanese handmade papermaking techniques" along with Hosokawa paper (Saitama Prefecture, currently one of the "Ogawa paper" varieties) and Sekishu-banshi (Shimane Prefecture). The city is served by the Nagaragawa Railway and the Tokai-Hokuriku Expressway. The city's manufacturing shipment value increased until 2004, but has remained almost flat since 2009. Makidani still produces Minoshi paper today. The city is home to the Maple Valley Forest (a natural monument), the Suhara Shrine Roller breeding grounds (a natural monument), and Mino Bridge (an important cultural property). The city center is rich in fireproof Udatsu-zukuri and Dozo-zukuri buildings from the Edo and Meiji periods, and the Kosaka Family Residence is a designated important cultural property. Area: 117.01 km2 . Population: 22,629 (2010). Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
