Critical philosophy (English: kritische Philosophie) German

It is usually used as a term to refer to Kant's philosophy of critique of reason, and in some cases to a series of philosophies, including the Neo-Kantian school, which inherit and develop the basic ideas of Kant's philosophy. Kant's philosophy of "Critique of Pure Reason" is nothing more than an attempt to determine the power and limitations of human reason with respect to a priori (innate) knowledge that is established independently of experience. Kant attempts to solve this problem by using a "transcendental" method, which regards classical mathematics and natural science, represented by Euclidean geometry and Newtonian physics, as concrete examples of the fact that a priori knowledge by human reason actually exists, and by rearranging the basic tools of traditional Western metaphysics to reveal the basis for the universal validity of knowledge in mathematics and natural science, thereby revealing their limitations.

As a result, nature as an object of cognition is reduced to a "phenomenon" as the totality of representations constructed by human transcendental subjectivity. As for the "thing-in-itself" beyond that, the well-known conclusion is drawn that human reason cannot determine it as positive cognition beyond regarding it as a regulating principle that should bring ultimate unity to its cognition. Here, it cannot be denied that there is a structure in which Euclidean space as the only space with a necessary structure, absolute space and absolute time as the only stationary coordinate system conceived by Newton, and the unity of the "transcendental apperception" of "I think" on the subjective side are mutually complementary. However, depending on how one reads it, it is also possible to interpret that Kant was thinking of productive imagination and reflective judgment that are not bound by such frameworks at the foundation of transcendental apperception. Therefore, it is not necessary to hastily conclude that critical philosophy cannot be effective beyond classical mathematics and classical physics, or that it is incompatible with dialectical thinking.

In fact, there are many contemporary forms of critical philosophy, from the Neo-Kantian school's attempt to revitalize critical philosophy by reworking and expanding Kant's tools of thought, to the later Husserl's attempt to revive transcendental philosophy based on the reality of the lifeworld, and, more recently, Strawson's reinterpretation of Kant from the standpoint of the analysis of everyday language.

通常はカントの理性批判の哲学、また場合によってはカント哲学の基本的発想を受け継いで発展させようとする新カント学派をはじめとする一連の哲学をさす用語として使われる。カントの「純粋理性批判」の哲学は、経験から独立に成立するア・プリオリ（先天的）な認識に関して、人間理性がいかなる権能とまた限界とをもつかを確定しようとするものにほかならない。カントはこの課題を、一方でユークリッド幾何学とニュートン物理学に代表される古典的な数学と自然科学を人間理性によるア・プリオリな認識が事実存在する具体例とみなし、他方で西欧の伝統的な形而上(けいじじょう)学の基礎的な道具立てを編成替えしつつ、数学、自然科学の認識の普遍妥当性の根拠を明らかにすることを通じて、その限界をあらわならしめるという、「超越論的」な手法によって解こうとする。

　この結果、認識の対象としての自然は、人間の超越論的主観によって構成される表象の総体としての「現象」にまで還元される。それを超えた「物自体」については、人間理性はその認識に究極の統一をもたらすべき統制的原理として、それをみなす以上に積極的認識としての規定をもたらすことはできない、というよく知られた結論が導かれることになるわけである。ここで、唯一の必然的構造を備えた空間としてのユークリッド空間、またニュートンの考える唯一の静止座標系としての絶対空間・絶対時間と、主観の側での「われ思う」の「超越論的統覚」の統一とが、互いに相関的に相補い合うものとして向かい合う構造がみられることは否定できない。だが読み方によれば、カントは、超越論的統覚のさらに根底にこのような枠にとらわれない生産的構想力や反省的判断力といったものを考えていた、と解することも可能である。したがって、批判哲学は古典数学や古典物理学を超えては有効性をもちえないとか、弁証法的思考になじまないとか速断することはあたらない。

　事実、新カント学派でのカントの思考の道具立ての新たな手直し、拡張による批判哲学の活性化の試みから、さらには、後期フッサールによる生活世界の現実を踏まえた超越論的哲学の新たな再生の試み、さらに近くは、ストローソンによる日常言語の分析の立場からするカントの再解釈など、批判哲学の今日的形態は数多くみられるのである。
