A group of Jomon period ruins located in Korekawa, Hachinohe City, Aomori Prefecture. This name is a general term for Ichioji ruins, which mainly contain artifacts from the early and middle periods, Hotta ruins, which are from the late middle to late period, and Nakai ruins, which are from the final period, but it is often the Nakai ruins that usually refers to them. The ruins are located on the gentle slopes and river terraces on the left bank of the Niida River, which flows north from northern Iwate Prefecture. Nakai ruins was located in the villa of the wealthy Izumiyama family, and was excavated from the mid-Taisho period to the early Showa period, with the investigation by the Oyama Prehistoric Studies Institute in 1928 (Showa 3) being particularly famous. Excavated remains include various pottery commonly known as Kamegaoka style, as well as red lacquered bows, decorated swords, combs, and lacquerware on a pedestal. In addition, wooden spatula-shaped products, high-rises, woven fabrics, and other plant-based products, as well as various seeds and nuts, were found in the peat layer, indicating the high level of cultural content in the late Jomon period. Ichioji Site is also a model site where a large number of cylindrical pottery from the early and middle Jomon periods was excavated in 1926 (Taisho 15) and 1929 (Showa 4) by Tohoku University and the Oyama Institute of Prehistory Studies, respectively, was used to establish the type and chronology of cylindrical pottery. At the Hotta Site, the remains of a pit dwelling and a stone collection site from the end of the middle Jomon period were discovered in a 1972 (Showa 47) excavation. These three ruins were designated as a national historic site as the "Korekawa Stone Age Site" in 1957. The Hachinohe City History and Folklore Museum is located on the site. [Kiyoshi Murakoshi] World Heritage RegistrationIn 2021 (Reiwa 3), the Korekawa ruins were registered as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) as a constituent asset of the "Jomon Sites in Hokkaido and Northern Tohoku" (Korekawa Stone Age Site) (World Cultural Heritage).
