Hainan Li and Miao Autonomous Prefecture

...China's second largest island, located in the South China Sea, separated by the 20km-wide Qiongzhou Strait, south of the Leizhou Peninsula in Guangdong Province, at the southernmost tip of China. It is also called Qiongya. It has an area of 33,900 ^km2 and a population of 7.34 million (1996). The majority of the population is Han Chinese, but there are also minority groups, including about 1.07 million indigenous Li people and about 50,000 Miao people who were forcibly relocated from the Baise region of Guangxi during the Hongzhi period of the Ming dynasty (1488-1505) to suppress the Li people. The entire island was part of the Hainan administrative district of Guangdong Province, but in April 1988 it became part of Hainan Province, and was separated from Guangdong Province. ...

...The population is about 1.11 million (1990). More than 90% of them are concentrated in the Hainan Li and Miao Autonomous Prefecture (established as an autonomous region in 1952, but renamed an autonomous prefecture in 1955), while the rest are dispersed to various places around the autonomous prefecture and live with the Han people. The total area of the autonomous prefecture is about 17,900 km2.
