Irish playwright. In 1937 he joined the IRA (Irish Republican Army) but was soon captured and spent a total of eight years as a prisoner. His breakthrough work, The Convict (1954), was based on these experiences. His autobiographical novel, Borstal Boy, became a bestseller.
