The silver halide used as a photosensitive material is only sensitive to short wavelength light below blue light, but by adsorbing a sensitizing dye to the silver halide, it can be made sensitive to green to yellow light, red light, and even infrared light. Photosensitive materials that are sensitive to light in the near ultraviolet to yellow wavelength range are called orthochromatic, or simply ortho, and such films are called orthochromatic films. Films that are sensitive to even red light are called panchromatic, and such films are called panchromatic films.
