Olivenite - Olivenite (English spelling)

Olivenite - Olivenite (English spelling)

A hydrous cupric arsenate mineral. As suggested by its formula Cu 2 [OH|AsO 4 ], it has the same structure as andalusite. It is part of the libethenite group along with libethenite (Cu 2 [OH|PO 4 ]), a phosphorus-substituted mineral with the same structure. Its idiomorphic forms include flat-topped rhomboids and pointed cuboids. They can be found alone or in clusters, but when formed in large quantities, they can be fibrous to prismatic, sometimes forming kidney-like or cluster-like structures. It occurs in the oxidation zones of various copper deposits, but is more common in deep-seated deposits such as contact metasomatic deposits (skarn-type deposits) and deep hydrothermal vein-type copper deposits. In Japan, the most famous mine is the Kitabira Mine (now closed) in Mito Town, Mine County, Yamaguchi Prefecture (now Mito Town, Mine City).

Coexisting minerals include conicalconite, oblique cuprite, cornishite, brochantite, malonite, and scorodite. It can be identified by its olive green color, as its name suggests. However, fibrous forms turn straw yellow in color and have a silky luster. The streaks do not lighten in color as expected. The name comes from its color.

Japanese:

同構造のリン置換体であるリベテン鉱libethenite(化学式Cu2[OH|PO4])などとともにリベテン鉱系を構成。
