Located in northern Hokkaido, across the Soya Strait, Wakkanai is the northernmost city in Japan, separated from Sakhalin by the Soya Strait. It was incorporated as a city in 1949. It is the location of the Soya General Subprefectural Bureau. The Soya Main Line runs through the city. Wakkanai prospered from herring fishing in the mid-Meiji period, and after the opening of the Soya Main Line in 1922, regular shipping routes to Sakhalin were opened and the city developed. After World War II, the city lost contact with Sakhalin. In 1991, the city established a friendship city with Korsakov City in Sakhalin Oblast, and regular shipping routes were resumed in 1995, but were discontinued in 2015. It is the base for bottom trawl fishing in Western Kamchatka and Primorsky Krai, and is also a popular seafood processing center for canned crabs and chikuwa. Cape Soya and Cape Noshappu jut out into the Soya Strait, and the west coast belongs to the Rishiri-Rebun-Sarobetsu National Park. Wakkanai Airport has flights to Tokyo, New Chitose, and other destinations, and jet planes have been in service since 1987. Ferries are available to Rishiri Island and Rebun Island. 761.47 km2 . 39,595 people (2010). → Related topics Soya [Subprefecture] Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
