A commercial and industrial city in central eastern Iowa, USA. With a population of 113,000 (1994), it is the second largest city in the state. The city was established on the right bank of the Cedar River in the 1830s, and its rapids became an important source of hydroelectric power, so it was once called Rapids City. Located in the Corn Belt, it developed as a distribution center for grains and livestock with the opening of the railroad in 1859. Industries such as meat processing, feed, and machinery can be found in the city, and it is the central city in the eastern part of the state.
