He was born in the country of Yutian or Tuhuoluo, and his father, Yuchi Ba Zhina, also served the Sui Dynasty. He painted Buddhist statues, portraits of people from the Western Regions, and flowers and birds on the walls of temples and Taoist temples in the capital Chang'an and Luoyang, and was praised as “exquisite” for his excellence in three-dimensional expression using uniformly thick lines that are said to be “like twisted iron wires twisted into threads,” intense colors, and unique shading techniques. …
