Honey locust - Honey locust

A deciduous tall tree of the legume family (APG classification: Fabaceae). It can reach a height of 15 meters. The trunk and branches have many thick branching spines that are modified twigs. The leaves are even-pinnately compound and grow in bunches, but those on young long branches are bipinnately compound and alternate. The leaflets are numerous and distorted ovate-oblong, 1.5-3 cm long. In summer, short branches with new leaves bear racemes 10-15 cm long, which bloom small pale yellow-green flowers with four petals. There are male and bisexual flowers, with eight stamens and one pistil. The legumes are broad linear, 20-30 cm long, flattened, slightly twisted and distorted, and ripen brown. They grow in mountains, fields, and riverbanks, distributed from Honshu to Kyushu. They are also used as garden trees and roadside trees. The name is said to be a corruption of the old name Saikaishi. The Chinese name Sokyo is, strictly speaking, the Chinese honey locust ( G. sinensis Lam.), and it is incorrect to refer to honey locust. The Chinese honey locust flower has a long stalk and the legumes do not twist. In traditional Chinese medicine, these legumes and thorns are used for expectoration.

マメ科（APG分類：マメ科）の落葉高木。高さ15メートルに達する。幹や枝に小枝が変形した太い分枝刺が多数ある。葉は偶数羽状複葉で束生するが、若い長枝につくものは2回羽状複葉で互生する。小葉は多数、ゆがんだ卵状長楕円(ちょうだえん)形で、長さ1.5～3センチメートル。夏、新葉をつけた短枝に長さ10～15センチメートルの総状花序をつけ、淡黄緑色の小さな4弁花を開く。雄花と両性花があり、雄しべ8本、雌しべ1本。豆果は広線形、長さ20～30センチメートル、扁平(へんぺい)でややねじれてゆがみ、褐色に熟す。山野や河原に生え、本州から九州に分布する。また庭園樹や街路樹とする。名は、古名の西海子(さいかいし)からの転訛(てんか)といわれる。中国名の皁莢(そうきょう)は、厳密には中国のシナサイカチ（トウサイカチ）G. sinensis Lam.であって、サイカチにあてるのは正しくない。シナサイカチは花に長柄があり、豆果がねじれない。漢方ではこれらの豆果や刺(とげ)を去痰(きょたん)などに用いる。
