The protagonist of an Arab story. (1) The main character of Hariri's Maqamat, a trickster who receives rewards from the people for his intelligence, wit, and poetic talent. (2) The protagonist of the magnificent Tales of Banu Hilal, set in North Africa. His father was the chief of the Hilal tribe who migrated from the Arabian Peninsula, his mother was a woman of Mecca's Sharif blood, and his adoptive father was Zahran, the chief of the rival Dahran tribe. The first half of the story depicts the feud between the two tribes, while the second half depicts the hero who gradually unifies the neighboring tribes with the Hilal tribe at the center.

アラブの物語の主人公。(1)ハリーリー作《マカーマート》の主役で，知性，機智，詩才を存分に生かして人々から報酬を受けるトリック･スター。(2)北アフリカ一帯を舞台にした雄大な《バヌー･ヒラール物語》の主人公。アラビア半島から移住したヒラール族族長を父に，メッカのシャリーフの血筋を引く女を母に，敵対するザフラーン族族長ザフラーンを養父に持ち，前半は両部族の確執を，後半はヒラール族を中心に近隣する部族をしだいに統合してゆく英雄。
