Atonement - Atonement

It refers to an item offered as payment to be purified of sins and impurities. In ancient times, when the legal system was not established, it was believed that both sins and impurities could be resolved by purification. Later, when the legal system was established, it was believed that sins were paid for by punishment and impurities were resolved by purification. The "Mia-ga" section of the Four Seasons Festival in the "Engishiki" lists such items as an iron man statue, a gold-plated sword, five-colored thin silk, thread, Aki cotton, ordinary cotton, hemp, white cloth, miso, hakama, fusuma, hoes, rice, sake, awabi, bonito, skewers, seaweed, salt, water basins, crucibles, boxes, oak trees, and small bamboo. The offerings were also presented at the annual Oharae rituals in June and December, and at the last day of each month.

罪穢(つみけがれ)を祓(はら)い清めるために、その代償として差し出した物品をいう。法制が確立しなかった古代には、罪も穢も祓(はらえ)で解消すると考えられていた。のち法制が確立すると、罪は刑で償われ、穢は祓によって解消すると考えられるようになった。『延喜式(えんぎしき)』四時祭(しじさい)上の「御贖(みあが)」には、鉄人像(まがねのひとがた)、金装横刀(こがねづくりのたち)、五色薄絁(いついろのうすぎぬ)、糸、安芸木綿(あきのゆう)、凡木綿(おおしのゆう)、麻(あさ)、庸布(ちからしろのぬの)、御衣(みそ)、袴(はかま)、被(ふすま)、鍬(すき)、米、酒、鰒(あわび)、堅魚(かつお)、腊(きたい)、海藻(め)、塩、水盆(みずひらか)、坩坏(かわしりつき)、匏(なりひさご)、柏(かしわ)、小竹(しの)などが記されている。御贖は毎年6月と12月の大祓(おおはらえ)や毎月晦日(みそか)の祓にも進上された。
