A village in Tsukuba County in the southwest of Ibaraki Prefecture. Population 14,230 (1995). It occupies lowlands along the Kokai River, with the Kinu River flowing on its western border. The Kanto Railway Jōsō Line and National Route 294 pass through the area, and it is also home to the Yawara Interchange on the Joban Expressway. The area was once a turbulent region of the Kinu River and Kokai River, but since the early Edo period, new rice fields have been developed through flood control projects under Ina Tadaharu, and it has become a vast rice paddy area. Rice is the main agricultural product, but greenhouse horticulture such as cucumbers is also on the rise. In recent years, factories selling agricultural machinery and housing materials have moved into the area. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
