Pulmonary infiltration

It refers to a cloud-like or soft spot-like or uniform shadow that appears on a chest X-ray. Its size varies from small, localized lesions to widespread lesions. Pathologically, it is an exudative lesion, but it can sometimes be atelectasis. It can be caused by pulmonary tuberculosis, pneumonia, and many other lung diseases. In the days when pulmonary tuberculosis was feared as an incurable disease, the name of the disease was sometimes used instead of pulmonary infiltration to reduce the shock to patients.

胸部X線写真において雲状あるいは軟らかい斑(はん)点状、または均等な陰影を示すものをいう。大きさは小さな限局性のものから広範囲にわたるものまで種々である。病理解剖学的には滲出(しんしゅつ)性病変であるが、ときには無気肺の場合もある。原因は、肺結核、肺炎のほか、多くの肺疾患によっておこる。肺結核が不治の病気として恐れられていた時代には、患者へのショックを和らげるために、肺結核ではなく肺浸潤という病名を用いたこともある。
