German journalist and author. Born on January 9th in Berlin to a wealthy Jewish merchant family. While a law student, he made his literary debut with the novel Rheinsberg (1912). After World War I, he wrote a wide variety of works, mainly for the weekly magazine Weltbühne, under four pen names, including Kaspar Hauser. His forte was in short satirical essays on current affairs, such as With Five Horsepower (1928) and Germany, the World's Greatest Germany (1929), as well as chansons for literary cabarets. He sharply criticized the militarism, bureaucracy, and judicial corruption of the Weimar era from the standpoint of socialist humanism. His other works include the novel Gripsholm Castle (1931). On December 21st, 1935, he committed suicide by taking poison near Gothenburg, Sweden, where he had emigrated.
